When the Stepping On Up Resident Support Committee learned how hard it is for people experiencing homelessness to wash clothes and bedding, they turned to Laundry Love, a national organization dedicated to providing laundry services to people with low and no incomes. The local chapter is now in full swing and beginning in June will be offering free laundry services once a week. Volunteers staff a Spirit Valley laundromat for three hours at a time, offering people the chance to wash up to two loads of clothes per week. Laundry Love volunteers provide snacks and activities as well, hoping that this service is more than just a place to clean your clothes, but an opportunity to build and celebrate community.
This project is a collaboration between Chum, the Stepping On Up Resident Support Committee, Laundry Love and Spin City Laundromat. St Michael's Catholic Church, St Paul's Episcopal Church, Lakeside Presbyterian Church and Duluth Vineyard Church provide the backbone of volunteers for the project, and Leadership Duluth has helped fundraise for our efforts.
